October 2019: Cycle Nation Collaboration Event

I volunteered at the American Heart Association Cycle Nation event in partnership with the Omega Nu club at National University. This event was held at Hotel del Coronado and was such a joy to network and meet other like minded professionals who cared about health, wellness, and staying active.

Some of the valuable lessons I learned from the event were as follows:

~ The actions you take affect your brain health. It is never too late to improve it. Get enough sleep. Exercise. Maintain a healthy body to have a sharp mind and healthy brain while reducing your risk for stroke, heart disease and difficulty with thinking and learning.

~ Eat healthy: Increase the amount of fruits and vegetables in your diet while reducing sodium, added sugar and unhealthy fats.

~ Where to watch for added sugars: Sugary drinks, sweetened breakfast syrups, and sweets, frozen treats, and sweet baked goods. Cut out added sugars. Always check nutrition facts on the label and ingredients.

~ Get regular check-ups. Don't smoke and if you do, stop.

How can you learn more? Talk to your doctor, nurse, or other healthcare professionals. Call 1-888-4-STROKE (1-888-478-7653) or visit heart.org/brainhealth
